What separates a strong Property Manager from a great Property Management leader?

The shift is from managing assets to influencing people, performance and direction. Great leaders understand the property and the numbers, but they also know how to build teams and lead through complexity.
Operations and leadership are different muscles
A strong property manager knows the building, the tenants, the budget and the vendor relationships. A great leader knows how to develop a team, set standards across a portfolio, and hold the bigger conversations with ownership and lenders. One is about execution. The other is about scale and influence.
The interview should test leadership, not just technical knowledge
I ask candidates about a capital decision they influenced, a team they built or repaired, and a moment they had to deliver hard feedback. Those answers reveal whether they are ready to lead, not only to operate.
Define the difference before you hire
Clients sometimes promote a strong operator into a leadership role and wonder why it does not stick. The issue is usually that the job was never clearly defined as leadership. AVID helps organizations define that step before the search begins.
