How do you run a job search confidentially while employed?

The short answer

Run it through a small number of trusted intermediaries rather than applications, keep your profile updated but unannounced, name off-limits companies in writing, interview outside working hours, and give references only at the offer stage with the candidate controlling timing.

01

Volume is what exposes people

Broad applications circulate a résumé through systems and inboxes you do not control. Two or three well-chosen conversations carry a fraction of the risk and reach better roles.

02

Set the boundaries in writing

Tell any recruiter you work with which organizations, boards and individuals are off-limits, and that your name is never released without prior approval on each specific role. A recruiter who will not agree to that is not working for you.

03

Manage the signals

Update your profile quietly with notifications off, avoid sudden bursts of new connections in one company, and keep references sealed until an offer is genuinely in play.
