What should an employer ask in a senior interview?

Ask questions that force evidence rather than description. Walk through career decisions and what triggered each one, probe a failure in detail, and test how the candidate would approach the first ninety days of this specific role. Rehearsed answers collapse under follow-up.

For employers

Motive and pattern

  • Walk me through your career progression and what triggered each move.
  • How do you know when it is time to leave a role?
  • What are you looking for that you cannot get where you are?
  • Why this organisation, specifically?

Scope and evidence

  • Tell me about your largest accomplishment. Why do you consider it a success?
  • What did you personally decide, and what did your team decide?
  • What does a normal week look like, and how do you set up a day?
  • What did you inherit when you arrived, and what did you leave behind?

Judgment under pressure

  • Describe a decision you got wrong. What did it cost, and what changed after?
  • Tell me about a conflict with a peer or a superior and how it ended.
  • When have you had to hold a position that was unpopular internally?
  • How have you handled a person who was well-liked but not performing?

Fit for this role

  • What would you examine in your first ninety days here?
  • What would you want answered in week one before committing to a direction?
  • What part of this mandate concerns you?
  • What would make you turn this role down?
